We expect that the probability of horizontal gene transfer depends on the magnitude of spatial intermixing of different populations. Our goal is to understand this replationship with particular emphasis on antibiotic resistance-encoding genes. We expect that spatial intermixing not only determines the extent of horizontal gene transfer but also the ability of genes to proliferate after transfer.
