Different patterns of spatial self-organization can have remarkably different features, such as the extent of interspecific mixing and the number of cell-cell contacts. Our goal is to test the effects of interspecific mixing on the spread of horizontally transferred genes. Our main hypotheses are that the extent of interspecific mixing determines the probability of horizontal gene transfer and proliferation.
