Microbial communities rarely exist under constant environmental conditions for prolonged periods of time. Instead, they often experience changes in their local environmental conditions. Our goal is to understand how environmental change affects spatial self-organization. Conversely, we also want to understand how spatial self-organization modulates the effects of environmental change on ecosystem processes.
